Subject:Could you please tell me something about this blue and white plate

It looks hand-painted, from the fret painting around the edge. It also has several firing flaws. It is not in particularly good condition with old glaze cracks. There appears to be a pattern of five spur marks on the back. Size 29 cms, slightly bowl shaped (4 cms).
Thank you for your thoughts.

Greetings - Unmistakably Japanese, Arita origin, Meiji era most likely, perhaps very late Edo era.

Hi, I am quite sure this is Shida-yaki porcelain from the late Edo period. Maybe others can confirm or correct me.

Interesting....I also felt it may be Japanese antique imari. Here is a picture of similar spur marks. It seems to be dated between 1750 and 1780.

This plate is Japanese, and most likely from the Kutani Kilns. With the 5 spur marks on the back I would date this piece to the mid 19th century or earlier.

Hi all,

I think Mat might be right: paintingstyle, color, cracking of the (bit matted) glaze and the backdecoration all points to Shida.

Regards,

Arjan
