Subject:Jade Buffaloes - old?
Posted By: JLim Fri, Oct 10, 2014 IP: 144.132.166.71

Hi all

Finally, I bid on this object - and lost. I have never attempted to buy jade before, but this object depicting a buffalo and its calf seemed very appealing to me.

Is this nephrite jade? Could it possible have any age on it? Is it aesthetically pleasing to anyone other than me?

THanks

Those buffaloes lack the sheen to indicate they're carved of either jadeite or nephrite. It looks more like serpentine of a softer stone such as steatite.

I've added a couple of photos of a modern jadeite buffalo cow and calf and a link to images of a late Ming nephrite censer of qilin form that I posted here five years ago. I believe the pictures will show the difference better than words.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thank you both for your help. I will continue to avoid jade objects, I think, since they seem to me to be a minefield of dangers.

Definitley real jade, but as to age I would say mid 20th century to modern....Still has some value though
