Subject:Need help identifying artist
Posted By: Ali Thu, Oct 16, 2014 IP: 50.154.174.102

I received this through my father's estate - I know it is over 50 years old, has a completely wooden frame w/bamboo design (hand carved? I don't know) - joined or hinged corners (no nails or screws) - brass? or other material hanging rings - matted w/silk or other woven material. I have tried to research the artist seal but have been unsuccessful - any assistance would be appreciated!

Looks like a picture by a Guangdong artist named Ju Lian (居廉, 1829-1904), who has signed the picture with a nickname that also appears in the seal. The inscription seems to say it was painted at age 73, which would be 1900. Whether it is genuine or a copy I can't tell from your photos, also because I don't know this artist's work well. The subject matter and general style is characteristic of Ju's work, but the detail photo you've posted suggests that this painting lacks the technical polish of some of his works posted online. What's the size of the painting itself?

the painting is approx. 12" x 18-20" - I looked at some of his other work online and this same stone is in another one of his works - nearly identical.
