Posted By: Ron Webber Tue, Oct 21, 2014 IP: 96.30.152.220

I am trying to date this Chinese carved??? box and cover, h. 2.25" - l. 6.25", it has a cover seal which cannot find anywhere, very heavy for size, has many characteristics of Zitan wood which does not show grain patterns, there is no mold marks.

Any info. or comments, especially on dating will be received with much appreciation.

very difficult to get an idea of this box without image. not sure what you mean by mold marks. ebony is also very heavy. so is padouk. zitan at any rate, being Pterocarpus santalinus, has a very distinctive grain. it's a bit like the back of a violin, although the wood a deep purple colour. not black. the black of ebony actually has a lot of green tannins. this can also be said about a number of the zitan generics; dalbergia melanoxylon; pterocarpus soyauxii; etc. zitan is very much on the deep purple range of the spectrum without any green/brown hues. the grain - very strong and obvious.

not sure if the box was carved or is a modern repro done in a mold.
