Subject:A "Puzzle-Box" - how old?
Posted By: JLim Thu, Oct 30, 2014 IP: 144.132.166.71

Hi all

I just bought the pictured object. What on earth is it? How does it work, and how old might it be?

very cool. I have seen sets of nested metal seals along these lines but unless the larger boxes also include seal legends on the faces that we can't see from your photo, my guess is that this is a set of pieces for some sort of a drinking game. Nested seals date to at least Ming times, not sure whether earlier, though I suspect your object(s) might more likely date from 100 years or so.

Thanks rat!! - any idea how this "drinking game" might have worked?

And...am I right in seeing Chinese words carved into the weird cube in the centre?
