Subject:I would appreciate some help in identifying this urn/vase
Posted By: Jenny Fri, Nov 07, 2014 IP: 213.66.76.157

Hi! I would really appreciate some help in identifying this urn/vase. It is ca 53 cm tall, on its widest area it is ca 28 cm in diameter, the top is ca 22 cm in diameter. The top is made by some kind of metall, i think it might be copper. I think it is hand painted. The bottom is signed.
Thank you for any information,

Best regards
Jenny

The kanji is a bit irregular but I believe the mark may read down and across from the right as "Made by Hichozan Kawasaki" (Hichozan Kawasaki Sei - 肥碟山 川崎製). I've not heard of this Hichozan before, though I found some brief mention on a French language website that restricts full details to members. The decoration is similar to that seen on Meiji-period (1868-1912) Arita porcelains, such as those marked Hichozan Fukagawa and Hichozan Shinpo. Kawasaki is a city in the vicinity of Yokohama, quite a distance from Arita.

Best regards,

Bill H.
