Subject:Help with partial JAPANESE translation
Posted By: Peter Sun, Nov 09, 2014 IP: 50.163.25.80

Hi. I am having trouble identifying a couple of character on these two vases. I'm wondering if someone could fill in what the missing characters are, and/or correct me if I got any wrong. I'm trying to figure it out myself, but so far I only have a little over half done. I know they are made my Ando, but the first mark does not conform to the standard AN-DO-ZO mark that I normally find. At the very bottom of both signatures, there are large characters that I've never seen before. Any help would be appreciated.

first one seems certain to be 龍, or dragon;the second is less obvious/more confusing to me

Hi Rat,

The second example looks to me like a 'kakihan', a kind of trademark that some Japanese artists attach below their signature. The long line across the bottom of the shape is fairly common in such marks.

Best wishes,

Mikeoz
