The mark, shown on its left side, normally reads from its right stack down as "Satsuma Ware, Made by Hotoda" (Satsuma Yaki, Hotoda Sei). Hotoda, also rendered "Hodota", I believe, was a well known painter of Satsuma type stonewares during the Meiji Period (1868-1912).

Keep in mind that the Satsuma fiefdom was dissolved after being on the wrong side of the Meiji Rebellion of 1868. This overthrow of the existing order opened the way for a host of private kilns and studios to use what had at one time been a royal mark. Practically speaking, though, the Hotoda mark usually is associated with some of the best quality wares to bear a Satsuma mark during the Meiji period.

Here's a similarly marked Hotoda censer about two feet tall that I encountered in a shop several years ago.

Best regards,

Bill H.
