Subject:Utamaro print
Posted By: Ken Sun, Nov 30, 2014 IP: 71.54.243.73

I have a Utamaro print that is part of an estate. I have an appraisal that was done in 1980 along with a pamphlet of the series it came from. I am trying to determine if it is original, and what it might be worth so I figure the right venue to sell it. I believe it to be titles "pensive love" from the series selected poems

There seems to be some water damage low on the bottom margins. Can't tell if it affects the picture. The colors lead me to believe this is a reproduction, of which there are many.

Hi.From first glance probably a 20th century restrike worth about 50 bucks. With some closer pictures I would be able to tell for sure.

Here is a link to an original (Reflective Love (Mono omou koi), from the series Anthology of Poems: The Love Section (Kasen koi no bu)) from the Boston MFA. You'll have to compare it to yours. Your tiny picture makes it impossible to compare from here.

What an interesting letter that Lawrence Feitlinger sent to Carol Locke in 1980! It is, of course, absolute nonsense, and serves to remind us that the "experts" are not always what they seem to be.

It's been 34 years since LF's current valuation and bold prediction. $2,000.00, compounded annually at the growth rate of 10% for 34 years would be worth $51,095.34 today. That's a current value of $8,515.89 for each of the 6 prints in the set.

You would be lucky to be able to sell one of those reprints today for $100.00. I certainly hope that Mr. Feitlinger's clients' investments were diversified into other areas instead of concentrated in the reprinted Japanese prints that he was recommending at the time.
