Posted By: mwr Wed, Dec 03, 2014 IP: 50.131.176.227

The saucer (image 1) has "Made in Japan" on the bottom.

The bowl is images 2 & 3.

Any information would be appreciated.

Judging from the brassy gilt and what seems to be a somewhat nontraditional depiction of Mount Fuji in the fog, I'd guess the Japanese saucer dates to the early post-occupation period, or circa the mid-50's through 1960's.

ISCO was one of several Hong Kong firms producing or at least selling metal-clad wares such as your bowl during the 3rd quarter of the 20th century, though business information on them seems to be lacking. After World War II, the USA and other principal members of the Western Bloc instituted sanctions, including heavy customs duties, on imports from Communist countries such as China. The decorating shops in British-controlled Hong Kong resorted to using porcelain blanks from Japan instead of Mainland China, thus the mark of "Japanese Porcelain Ware Decorated in Hong Kong." After US President Nixon visited China in the mid-1970s, levies on such imports were relaxed, and Hong Kong makers started relying on blanks made in China.

Best regards,

Bill H.
