Subject:Ivory Netsuke
Posted By: Andy Mon, Dec 15, 2014 IP: 36.2.133.206

Hello,

I am looking at buying a Netsuke from Japanese auction.

http://zenmarket.jp/en/auction.aspx?itemCode=d159928974

Can anyone please help with identifying the period when this one was made?

Also, sellers on auctiones do not ship abroad. Anyone had experience with ZenMarket forwarding service?

Please advise.
Thank you
Andy

The work looks pretty crude. It is recently made (20th century at the earliest - likely later). It doesn't look like ivory. If is not ivory, there is no ban on shipping abroad - other than seller not wanting to ship abroad.

I wouldn't buy it.

Cheers,
Stan

I would never purchase a netsuke if I could not hold it in my hand first. This doesn't look very old to me.

If this is elephant ivory, and if the seller doesn't have some kind of legitimate certification that this is ANTIQUE ivory (and even then . . .?) you may have difficulty having this shipped to you because of CITES regulations.

I would not take the chance.

It sold for $50 which is about the going price for modern Chinese poorly carved imitation netsuke. Can't leagaly import this. Especially liked their return policy: 'Impossible'. Regards, Jim

This could be Plant ivory...Tagua nut.
