Subject:Small Chinese Painting - please help rat - mikeoz!

Hi all, I have this small Chinese ( I think rather than Japanese? ) painting on paper. It is mounted on cardboard. Could you please help me understand the inscription? I think the three letters to the left and the seal are the same, so I assume it is the artist's name? And is it just a souvenir item or is the quality a bit better? And how old is it? (I think it is certainly 20th century?)
Thank you very much,
Mat

yes, it does seem Chinese, second half 20th century, maybe quite recent, painted and written in the style of Shitao (an early Qing individualist painter), by someone named Wu Feng (the first two of the three characters and the two characters on the seal). The third character "sheng" suggests this was painted from life, which is unusual and is normally accompanied by another character "xie", meaning "written" (from life). So not 100% sure what's going on there.

The first four characters are in two columns and are a title for the scene: "Evening Bell at a Temple in the Mist"

Nice little scene, I like the modeling of the rocks with washlike brushstrokes, the foliage dots, and the atmospheric qualities his use of ink tonality gives the trees. not so much variety in the use of the brush though; calligraphy could be cleaner.

And there is another one that seems to be good at landscapes, if I understand the automatic translator right. Maybe that is the one?

could be, but I don't see anything further about him aside from a partial picture featuring bamboo in color. so I'm not sure it's the same person.

It is done by Wu Zeng, a famous painter in his time!

Thank you Sue, but why do you think it is him? Do you mean Wu Zheng (1878-1949)? But his signature is not the same???

Thank you so much, rat! Do you think it could be the Wu Feng I show in the link? That one seems to paint mainly horses, but to my eye it looks like he also uses the sheng in his signature? Of course the seal is not the same... Thank you again,
Mat

Here is another painting from the Wu Feng with the horses, this time a landscape:

the page isn't loading for me, but this guy seems to be the same as the other Wu Feng you linked to.

Thank you rat again for taking your time! There seem to be two painters called Wu Feng, one born 1936 and good at painting landscapes, and the other one, born 1969, who prefers to paint horses. The latter one with the horses seems to have painted the landscape in the link that did not work for you. I try to link here to the same painting on another site. So far the style of that painting seems the closest to my painting until now.
