Subject:Two lacquer containers - Japan Chinese?
Posted By: Niels Fri, Dec 26, 2014 IP: 77.174.139.253

I have these two wooden containers with lacquer finish. The outside is red/ orange with some black details/ underground. The inside is without paint. Perhaps Japanese or Chinese? Does anyone here have any info or suggestions? Thanks!

best,
Niels

This type of red finish is found on some lacquer made by Burmese and Shan (The latter being ethnic Tai people of Burma who are related to the Thai and Lao). I'm not certain such forms are found in those areas, though.

Best Regards,

Thank you Bill. This has puzzled me too. The shape of these lidded cups look more European than Asian to me...
