Subject:Sake Set?
Posted By: Kenny Fri, Jan 02, 2015 IP: 162.252.97.95

Hello

I purchased this very pretty set (lidded pot & 8 cups) at a flea market. I think it will work great for sake, but in order to not look foolish I would like to know if it is mismatched or something else. Is it 8 cups and a tea cup, or actually a sake set, or something else?

Also anyone know the mark?

Thanks!

Ernest is right. A tea set. The lidded cup and saucer is called a Gaiwan, and is the vessel in which the tea is brewed. Using the lid as a strainer, the tea is poured into the smaller cups for the guests. The liquor is always drained off the tea leaves every time, which avoids the tea over-brewing, and allows the multiple use of the leaves for subsequent pourings.

Enjoy!
