Subject:identification help?
Posted By: Nicole Tue, Jan 06, 2015 IP: 99.251.255.177

Hi there, just wondering if anyone can read this script? There is a large character on the front and then more on the side. Is it the artist's signature?

Thank you very much!

I believe your vase with plum blossom motif may be Japanese and probably dates to circa the 3rd quarter, 20th century. With your photo flipped 90 degrees to the right, the four kanji characters 富貴長命 form the blessing "Fu Ki Cho Mei", meaning "Riches, Honors and Long Life". It is equally propitious as "Fu Gui Chang Ming" in Chinese, which language spawned the phrase. If I'm wrong about its origins, my second guess would be made in Taiwan, a former Japanese colony, circa mid-century.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Hello Bill,

I happened to see your response for identification help and wondered if you might have any knowledge at all about what these characters in white on the bottom of this stool/table mean?

I have asked here before but got no response. I even sent an email photo to an antique shop in Shanghai and the person there told me he did not know the meaning of these characters. This seems very strange to me. Somebody must know what these characters mean or they would not have been written on the bottom of this table. Can you give me any information at all about these characters? Thank you very much.

Keith, I replied with a translation in your original posting to facilitate easier retrieval via the forum search feature.

It was written in Cantonese and therefore people in Shanghai would have no idea what it meant just like if it was written in Shanghaiese I would be totally lost. I posted my translation in your original request too.
