Subject:Qianlong Fish Bowl?
Posted By: Helen Sat, Jan 17, 2015 IP: 2.221.223.96

Hi all,

Can anyone give me any indication of when this bowl was produced? Was purchased in China 1960's has Qianlong mark on the unglazed base but understand this means nothing. Is it Famile Rose? The bowl measures 16inches wide and 14 inches tall.

This bowl probably was new when purchased. Could have been decorated and bought in Macao or Hong Kong instead of Mainland China, which was experiencing instabilities due to the Great Leap Forward (1958 to 1961) and Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution (1966-76). Since this item is transfer-decorated, whereas the French term "Famille Rose" is the "Pink Family" of colors in the porcelain-painter's palette, the term seems inapplicable to anything decorated by mechanical means like your bowl.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Hi Bill,

Many thanks for your reply, the information is very helpful. Would the enamel have been applied mechanically also?

Regards,

Helen

Looks like it was to me, based on the uniformity of the repeating pattern elements.
