Subject:Hawk/Stork Japanese Scroll Painting
Posted By: Stan Mon, Jan 19, 2015 IP: 24.147.28.167

I have a chance to buy several contemporary Japanese scrolls. The one below looks older to me.

I've can't get the artist. All I've got is (somebody)(hisa/hide?)nobu on the outside of the scroll and (somebody)nobu on the painting. What can you tell me about the artist and period? We haven't talked price yet. What do you think it is worth?

Below is the painting, an inscription on the outside of the scroll, and the signature (?) on the painting.

Thanks for your help.

Cheers,
Stan

Stan,

The signature reads 'KanĂ´ Naganobu hitsu' (狩野栄信筆, 'painted by Kano Naganobu').

The artist is KanĂ´ Isen'in Naganobu (1775-1828).
The text on the verso of the scroll mentions the date Bunsei 11 (1828), but this is probably a biographical reference to the date of the artist's passing.

It's of course a very nice 19th c. Kano painting; the value depends highly on the overall condition. The mounting of the scroll seems recent.

Guy.

Guy,

Thanks for your help. I'll try to get a look at it in person when the owner's son returns to the area in the spring.

Cheers,
Stan

The owner is back and quoted a price of $1450. That is probably out of my range. I did have my heart set on buying it.

Cheers,
Stan
