Subject:Oldddd Chinese Porcelain Identification Help!

Hey everyone! Here is a very old chinese porcelain bowl recovered from a wealthy Boston estate. Any help or input on this piece would be greatly appreciated.

This pedestal bowl with archaized famille rose decoration of immature dragons (chilong) amidst foliage has a Qing Dynasty Daoguang (1821-50) reign mark on the base. The enamels are for the most part applied quite thinly, and the overall decoration tends toward the amateurish side. The piece strikes me as made around 1930 or later, when the civil war had begun to strain supply lines and the skilled manpower pool for kilns at Jingdezhen.

Best regards,

Bill H.

I appreciate your expertise here Bill. Would you suggest cleaning it any particular way?

Soap, warm water and a soft toothbrush won't hurt properly fired porcelain but will take off any restorative painting that might be present and may rub away gilding. Imbedded stains can be removed by using hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), which is available in 40-percent strength from some barber & beauty salon suppliers. It will not harm hard-paste porcelain, but chlorine bleach has caustic effects on soft-paste ceramics and some enamels, so should not be used. Put the stained porcelain piece in a large plastic tray or bowl and apply the H2O2 solution carefully, using a nylon brush while wearing rubber gloves. Don't do this anywhere children are present. It's best to keep the item in the solution overnight if heavily stained. Works pretty good on organic food stains

Good luck,

Bill H.

The mark says Yongzheng 1723- 38 . But your bowl is late 19 centuri. In the 19 centuri many pieces were labeled as Yongzheng or Kangxi.
Not to copy anything, but more for admiration for the past.

What makes you claim that its "very old" when you have no idea what it is?

My apologies. It's appearance, weight, and feel led me to that claim. I am by no means an expert.

me neither, but "very old" in the Chinese art context can mean nearly 3,000 years ago rather than 100 years old. I think Bill H is on track on your bowl though: it has a Daoguang reign mark (1820-1850), but its shape and the quality of its decoration suggests that it was made considerably more recently than that.
