it does appear to be the right quality.
zitan although very dense is also the most brittle of the hardwoods, and is therefore by far the best raw material to carve. The chisel retains a sharp edge for far longer than hongmu. By and large if a piece is as well carved as this one seems to be it is usually either huali wood of zitan
