Subject:Kilin Glass Snuff Bottle
Posted By: Stan Sun, Feb 01, 2015 IP: 24.147.28.167

I bought this snuff bottle on a whim this weekend because I liked the kilin design. Plus, the designs on the sides are different.

Glass snuff bottles are notoriously hard to date. This one seems to be older (not made yesterday). It has snuff residue inside and, thus, was actually used for its intended purpose. There are no markings on the base. Does the execution of the kilin give any clue to age? Any thoughts appreciated.

Cheers,
Stan

This looks like one of the nine dragons, if it were not for the ears, which should be horns. The split tail and appearance like a salamander is characteristic for that...

The decoration depicts an immature dragon (chilong - 螭龍), one on which the horns have not yet grown out. I believe they also are called "bifid" dragons for their split tails.

I'm not a serious collector of snuff bottles so will abstain from speculating on the age of yours.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Bill,

You're right. I'm confusing my mythical beasts.

Cheers,
Stan
