Subject:Any Info on Paintings?
Posted By: Jess Wed, Feb 04, 2015 IP: 75.90.99.65

I recently got these two paintings and would really appreciate if anyone could give me more info on them. They were being sold as a pair, but I'm not sure if they are by the same artist.
Also the mark on blue painting is very faded so I didn't include a photo of it, but if I need to I will.
Thanks in advance.

These are probably older reproductions (on paper?) of two Japanese hanging scrolls depicting bijin (beauties) from the 1780s, painted by the famous ukiyo-e artists Isoda Koryusai (1735-90) and Torii Kiyonaga (1752-1815).

Yeah, I'm very sure they are reproductions, but I was still a bit curious on the background behind them. Thanks very much for the information.

These are Japanese woodblock prints. The signatures are in the lower right of each print. If the signatures are the same, the artist is the same for both prints. The signatures look different from this distance. The signature you show might be Torii Kiyonaga. My concern is that Kiyonaga typically used a two character signature: Kiyonaga.

Stan

Thanks for the info.
The signatures are definitely not the same from what I can make out. The signature on the blue one is very faded, but it doesn't seem to match the one printed on the pink print.
I'm not sure if it is even readable, but here's a photo of the signature on the blue.

First one reads 'Torii Kiyonaga ga' (painted by Kiyonaga); second one reads 'Koryusai ga' (painted by Koryusai).

See Guy's response above. He nailed it.
