Subject:Changsha spouted pot, Belitung?
Posted By: gemi Sat, Feb 07, 2015 IP: 86.149.169.150

Dear All,

I have a small (16.5cm) spouted Changsha pot. My pot is in much too good a condition, part from a chip to the rim. I am looking for opinions if this is from the Belitung wreck, and whether it could really be Tang dynasty. It has a fine crazing, and appears as if a clear lacquer may have been applied at some time. There are figure medallions under the side handles, and twin fish below the spout. The neck of my pot appears quite tall in comparison to pots i have seen from the Belitung wreck.
What would the use of such a pot be? Water or wine? ewer?

Thankyou for your help. Jeff

While resembling Changsha coloration, the body is paler and more refined than the old wares.

Double fish motif suggests made to be for a wedding present. Not an expensive one, though, since the handle is not well finished.

You could call it an ewer, could be for wine, oil, any liquid.

I would place this as last quarter 20th century.
