Subject:Japanese IVORY sake cups- hand painting with lettering
Posted By: Phil Sun, Feb 08, 2015 IP: 74.105.89.208

Purchased in 1976 from a Princeton NJ art dealer
These Ivory cups were owned by a Princeton family who had long standing ties to Japan
excellent condition and was described to me as an 19th century piece
I can't find anything or any picture related to this item in IVORY - hand painted with lettering

These are Chinese, not Japanese.

I would like to verify the approximate time period for these cups, value, and a confirmation why they are Chinese by origin. Thank You....Phil

In that case you'll need to consult and pay an appraiser. Free opinions, some well-informed, some less so, are all that are offered here. Having seen other such Chinese objects carved and colored similarly, I'm of the view they are 20th century Chinese, better than average quality, but still meant as decorative items.
