Subject:legal to purchase Vietnam antique?
Posted By: Marshal Mon, Feb 09, 2015 IP: 14.0.207.24

Hello, if I buy an old pair of antiques from a personal collection, what legalities are involved. In this case it involves a couple of Dongson bronzes. But in general, is it legal to buy and to own? Also in the collection are some porcelain vases from China of middle value 4-5000 us dollars each. The collection is in the USA.

Hi,

It is illegal to export antiques from Vietnam.
But there should not be any restriction to buy them from an outside country.
At the exception of ivory and national treasure items, you are free to buy a Vietnamese or Chinese antique located in the USA.
Cheers.

Thank you, Is a 1 foot slightly repaired drum considered a treasure? The other item is a ladle of sorts.

No other provenance. Been in the states for at least 15 years as I have seen it on her (the collector's) shelf. She got it from her parents.
