Subject:4 Chairs engl. or chinese (or both???) HELP
Posted By: Matthias Tue, Feb 10, 2015 IP: 62.113.207.34

hello.
could anybody help me with this peculiar set of four chairs ?
the upper part looks very chinese to me, whilst the bottom part ( legs with pad-feet, turned H-stretchers) is clearly georgian ( england, late 18th century).
I am a restorer of furniture and have seen plenty of mahogany of all types. at first I thought the chairs were made out of cuba mahogany, but at a closer look I dismissed this idea.
now I am depending on your expertise and ambition.
can anybody tell what kind of wood these chairs are made of ? ( shoulder splat and legs are made out of two different hard-woods, stretchers are made out of a clear, almost white wood which resembles european birch-wood).
Are these chairs english-made under chinese influence, or chinese under english influence ?
any comment , any hint, any advice will be gratefully appreciated. thanks in advance.
