Subject:I would love to know who this artist is......
Posted By: katrina Tue, Feb 17, 2015 IP: 107.15.131.63

I bought this picture about a year ago in a small antique shop I frequent. Simply because I fell in love with it - but it would be great to know who's responsible for such a beautiful picture. So any information you guys can provide would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks for taking a look.

Appears to be from Li Keran[1907-1989]

Sorry not to be more helpful, but I am having trouble reading the characters of the artist's name (leftmost column it seems). The title is "Spring Rains in the South" (literally, south of the river, referring to the general Wuxing/Suzhou/Hangzhou area, west and southwest of Shanghai). The seal is a pen name, seemingly "Keliang", but I can't make out a date or artist's name in the remaining inscription. Likely painted in the 1990s or later.

See the following link for a similar scene by Li Keran, sold at Christies:

Haha, the seal I misread as "Keliang" should be "Keran", your painting being an imitation of similar works in Li Keran's style... sorry for the mistake, and thanks to John R

The artist is " Tong Du Cau " and done in winter of 1921.

Annie,
Rat gave you a good lead with the Christie's link. Now, here are a few more links to follow.Go to Sotheby's dot com and search Li Keran. They have 187 links. Do the same for Christie's and Bonham's. Take a good hard look at the seal and signature on your painting. Do they match EXACTLY. Research the life and style history of Li Keran. Where would your painting fit into that timeline? Now, go deeper. Check online for books on Li Keran. Buy whatever you can afford.

Here is a great free resource. etheses.dur.ac.uk/995/2/995_v2.pdf. It is a 370 page Doctoral theses on Li Keran done by Weihe Chen.

Hope this helps you on your quest for more information.

Thank you to everyone for all the helpful information!!! You guys are great!! Now given all that information - if only it was the 'real' thing lol. But I'm sure it's probably a poster that's matted and framed lol. Still beautiful though. Thanks again everyone!!! Xoxo
