Subject:Help needed identifying signature.
Posted By: Robin Bodiford Thu, Feb 19, 2015 IP: 66.170.193.122

Hello! I would appreciate any help in identifying the name of the artist on this painting on silk. It appears that it was framed in glass (there is a glare from the glass in the pictures) on August 30, 1965. It is about 4' tall x 2' wide. Thank you for any information!

not sure, the inscription seems to be 淳筆, the seal legend 莊X之印
Japanese picture

I was just wondering how accurate the Google translator is now? The seal legend translates to "Mark Noriyuki 莊 X." I remember sometime ago reading that the Google translator wasn't all that reliable but is it getting better? Thank you!

Mark Noriyuki? No, there's nothing of that sort on the seal. The last two characters of the seal (之印) simply mean "the seal of ____", and I can't make out the second character of the legend, so I'm afraid that unless someone else can, the seal will only serve to confirm one art name (starting with 莊) of whoever is going by the signature 淳筆, which itself is likely another art name. Sorry it's complicated, but it is.

I agree, Rat! It is a very complicated. I've been researching several items and it is a daunting process (yet, very enjoyable!) so I very much appreciate your expertise and valuable input!

I was told by a local lady that the artist's name is 淳 莊 (Chun Zhuang). I know it's a needle in a haystack, but does anyone happen to be familiar with this name?

Again, many thanks!

I'm afraid your friend is a bit off the mark (haha). The pronunciation you have is Chinese (Mandarin) rather than Japanese, but stylistically the picture seems quite Japanese. Also, if this was actually a person's name, the characters would be reversed, since 莊 can be a surname but 淳 is not. You might try reposting with "Japanese painting" in the subject line to see if any of the Japan experts catch it and can suggest a plausible reading.
