Subject:A Pair (2) of Blue Gilt Cong-Shaped Chinese Guangxu Marked Vases
Posted By: Abraham G Fri, Feb 20, 2015 IP: 172.56.33.149

I inherited these among other pieces. I've done my research, and they appear to be correct Mark and Period. Anyone who is experienced in Chinese Porcelain, I would greatly appreciate your input!

Here is a link to all the pictures I took of them.

Thank you for everyone's time.

Hi Abraham,
These appear to be minyao copies of the cong vase made for the palace, but for some reason known to the potter, decorated with the addition of ancient Chinese bronzes.
Occasionally one finds a fanghu vase with similar decoration.
Regards
Tony

Abraham, I'll chime in on Tony's observations with photos of another fanghu that has famille rose decoration added over an original teadust glaze. This was a somewhat unsuccessful combination, because the high-fired iron-based teadust glaze was too hard for the add-on famille rose pigments to vitrify properly without pushing kiln temperature past the point where these enamels would begin to fry. Consequently, quite a bit of fritting developed in parts of the added decoration. Some of the ragged edges in the motif on your cong vase may have been due to the same sort of problem in reconciling kiln temperatures for the add-on enamels.

Best regards,

Bill H.

I remain uncomfortable with these vases.

The fanghu vase sold at Gorringes U.K. for 1,300 pounds, despite having a provenance allegedly back to 1954.

Another pair are on eBay, but these may be the same pair as yours?

A search on Google images showed no Guangxu cong with this design, but other blue cong with elaborate gilded decoration are being offered by known sellers of fakes.

My agent in Hong Kong had also never seen these before, even after 30 years in charge of the antique division of Chinese Arts and Crafts.

The foot rims too are troublesome, given that their V shaped feet are consistently dirtied.

Too many warning signals for me I'm afraid.

Regards
Tony
