Subject:Japanese Vase Identification
Posted By: JNance Sun, Feb 22, 2015 IP: 75.139.82.215

I would like any information on the identification of this vase and Japanese characters on the bottom. My father, a U.S. army officer, was stationed in Japan immediately after WWII. This note was found inside the vase: "With sincerest best wishes and remembrances of your tour in Kofu (Japan). It was our pleasure to have you with us. (Signed) "The Yamanashi Military Government Team, March, 1949."

The mark reads 'Shitada-mura' (下田村), probably the name of the village in Niigata Prefecture where this object was made.
Looks Edo period, pre-Meiji to me but I'm not familiar with this sort of older Japanese metalwork.

Guy.

It read's Kutani, and made in late 18th century.
