Subject:need help identifying a japanese woodblock print stamp
Posted By: alan Sat, Feb 28, 2015 IP: 188.29.164.255

hi i am just trying to determine the date (age) of this japanese woodblock print and was wondering if anyone would recognise the small round stamp on the bottom right of the image. i guess that this is either the publishers or possibly the carvers mark. Any advice would be much appreciated.

The symbol you are interested in is too small to see.

Your print is a reproduction of Sharaku's "Actor Matsumoto Kôshirô IV as Gorôbei, the Fishmonger from San'ya". The original was printed in 1794.

Here is an original at the Boston MFA:

Cheers,
Stan
