Subject:Unusual vase
Posted By: Rod Wallace Sat, Feb 28, 2015 IP: 50.174.39.154

I cannot find any information about this unusually shaped vase nor have ever been able to find any similar vase. It was given to my parents as a wedding gift by an antiques dealer relative in 1944. My father recently passed away and it has come into my possession. It does not seem to have any identifying marks. Any information as to origin, period or just its function would be greatly appreciated.

The palette and slip-painting technique on what I believe is a water bottle remind me of polychrome-decorated pottery made in Vietnam, Japanese wares are seen in the similar technique called "moriage", but this dragon doesn't look like the typical Japanese version in its treatment of the claws (through your photos make such details hard to discern).

I couldn't spot another example with dragon decoration but provide a link here to another vintage slip-painted Vietnamese jar FYI.
