Subject:Help identifying vase - China
Posted By: Help in identifying vase - China Sun, Mar 01, 2015 IP: 68.84.78.37

Hello,
Thank you for your assistance. I aquired this vase from a woman who lived in my apartment building in Philadelphia (in the Art Museum neighborhood). She stated that her father was stationed abroad (possibly Vietnam, but am unsure) during his time in the military and brought this vase home. I admired its deep crimson and teal colors and the motif of lotus flowers. I have been trying to research this vase, but have not had any luck. I am curious if it is of further value, beyond that I receive by glancing at it everyday. Any help is greatly appreciated.

*Please note that the photo does not depict the nice gloss of the piece.

Apparently, there must have been a glitch in uploading the photo of the motif. Please find it here:

FYI, these images provide no way for anyone to add to what you already know about this vase.

I am wondering what value a piece like this would have.

"CHINA" marks like this one, which looks like it may be painted on the base as opposed to being fired-on in the kiln, sometimes are found on older Chinese porcelain that was marked in this manner to make it legal for export after 1890. As such, circa 1890 or later would be a fair dating for this vase. By the way, the decoration is peach branches with buds and ripe fruit.

I suggest for the value you search via Google or a website archive such as the one at liveauctioneers.com (you'll have to subscribe, but it is free). Use the keywords 'peach bottle vase crackle' and see if you can find one of the same general age and the dimensions, the latter which aren't mentioned here.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thank you, Bill. I will look not these great suggestions. I always referred to the motif as lotus flowers, but more recently believed it to be some sort of blossom per your suggestion of peach blossoms. Thank you for your suggestions and for pointing me in the right direction.

Best Regards,
Lynn
