Subject:Need help to identify antique Bronze Asian/Indonesian (Thai?) Urn with Buddha at top
Posted By: Erik Sun, Mar 01, 2015 IP: 76.94.194.245

This bronze urn was my grandparents. They bought it around 1960 or so. There is very little information about it. Can anyone point me in a direction to know anything about it? I am including the card that was inside it also which is vague at best. It just notes that it could be from Thailand, Nepal, or Indonesia (Java or Bali). Buddha sits at the top on the lid and looks like how Thailand represents the Buddha. There was another urn/incense receptacle they had that I am going to post also because I also have little idea about what that is as well. I do know that the other urn is dated around 1850, and this one is noted to be well older than that. But I really just done know. Thanks so much for any help!

This is definitely Thai and not very old. The craftsmanship is not very fine either. I have an almost similar piece which had been covered in gold paint or leaves. It is used to contain offerings at the alter.

Probably not for offerings, but for blessing people when they come to the temple. The wax inside is to protect the piece from the water. Yes, it is Thai. Difficult to date from the pictures, but my guess would be early 20th Century. based on what you have said about the piece.
