Hallo Henk,

This is hard ... the link doesn't work and the pictures are (to) small. With a lot of fantasy .... maybe somthing like "Kaga Kutani Watano sei" To be sure better photo's are needed.

Regards,

Arjan

Made by a Company " Toshi Zhoa ". Most like late 19th.

I believe the mark may read down and across from the right as "Kaga Kutani Watano Sei" (Made at Kaga, Kutani [region] by Watano). The foto fuzz factor clouds the 2nd character in the left stack too much to read it with certainty. I believe this character might help identify the Watano generation responsible for the piece, though I don't have the references to on hand to determine those dates in any event. The painting is consistent with the Meiji period (1868-1912). Ormolu mounts on the piece probably were added by an owner.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Based on the below photo, I believe the kanji in Henk's mark is as follows:

加賀九谷 - Kaga Kutani
綿野製 - Watano Sei

Perhaps Arjan or another of our astute Japanese collectors knows where this fits date-wise among the various Watano marks.

Thanks,

Bill H.

P.S., I usually try to avoid and discourage others from sending private emails to forum participants at home on forum topics, not that I'm trying to be elitist but because the practice deprives others of information of interest to them on the topic. Also, my spam filter diverts many such emails to the junk folder. Appreciate your understanding.

Hi all,

Poster send me a few beter photo's and I think our "guess" of "Kaga Kuntani Watano sei" was/is right. The forelast character (No) seems different from what we see most but this is probably caused by the fact that the 3 generations of Watano used 3 different characters for the "no".

Regards,

Arjan
