Subject:Help Identifying Mark
Posted By: C Taylor Thu, Mar 05, 2015 IP: 99.95.48.180

I acquired a beautiful porcelain tea set from an estate and am having trouble identifying the mark. The mark is on each piece and almost as beautiful as the set itself. I believe it is a Kutani mark but not certain, any information would be helpful, thank you.

The mark reads down in three stacks from the right as:

日本 - Nihon or Nippon

島田造 - Shimada Zo

横浜 - Yokohama

The mark may be translated in context as "Made by Shimada at Yokohama, Japan.

Since "Japan" doesn't have "Great" (大 - dai) in front of it, I infer this tea set is likely a post-Meiji era product.

Best regards,

Bill H.
