Subject:Re: Bonsai Planter

Can't tell much about where the planter might have been made, as it appears to be a fairly contemporary design, and the characters (shown upside down) could have been used by Chinese, Japanese and Korean makers. In Mandarin Chinese they would read as 'Fa De' (法徳), which may be translated in the Buddhist context as 'Legal and Ethical'. Since the 2nd character is a Ming dynasty version of "de" used in Japan, the odds may weigh in favor of this being a Japanese product. In that case, the pronunciation could be something like "Noritoku", though there are several other possibilities. Google tried its best to convert my query into "Noritake", but I believe different characters are used by that porcelain maker.
Good luck,
