Subject:Dragonware - who is the maker?
Posted By: Kristen Sun, Mar 22, 2015 IP: 107.195.168.149

Hello,

I have a dragon pitcher? and was curious about who made this and what does it say? Supposedly my grandfather got it but I don't know anything about it.

Thank you!

-Kristen

Hi Kristen,

I think it is confusing to call this "dragon ware". That's usualy used for another kind of Japanese ceramics. What you have is a very nice example of "Sumida gawa" with dragon motif of the early 1900's. It has lost most of his black painting but that is rather common for this kind of ware.

Regards,

Arjan

Your pitcher is an example of Sumida Gawa pottery. The mark reads down from the top right in seal-writing script as "Inoue Ryosai". A similar pitcher also marked with the same name is pictured on page 167 of "Sumida...according to us" (2001) by Herbert Karp & Gardner Pond. The same book notes that three potters signed this name to Sumida ware during the late 19th and early 20th century.

Best regards,

Bill H
