Hello,

All your "Tang" statues are supposed to be from the Tang dynasty, according to their style.

Some are more convincing than others but all have the particularity of being made from white clay, the favorite material used by fake makers.

Only imperial statues are made from white clay and are not as white as yours. Most are made of red clay and never made of dark grey clay.

This particular sancai statue is well done but the dog being with green glaze and the lady made with blue & brown glaze, is a kind of combination of glazes I have never seen on a real Tang statue. Either they are all with blue & brown, or all in green and brown.

The other statues have some details too well designed to be old.

I have some strong doubt that they are from the period.

Cheers.

Hi Pierrevdw,

Thanks for sharing your knowledge on Tang statues.

I have with me a statue of a seated lady made from white clay with all green and brown glaze which I bought from a stranger from China about 20 years ago for SGD 120.

I wonder if I have collected a genuine imperial statue from the Tang period that has never been seen by the public before.

Any idea how much the real imperial glazed statues are worth?

Thanks.

Hi Jac,

All will depend of it's size.
If imperial it is worth several thousands Sing $.
A photos and size might be helpful, but at the price you paid it it is likely a recent reproduction.
Cheers

Thanks again for all the feedbacks.

Height of the seated figurine is about 14 inches.

I will take photos of my seated Tang figurine for all to see. It is different from the recent reproduction pieces that I get to see at antique/art shops here in Singapore.

I have never handled genuine Tang glazed figurines and I do not have the knowledge to tell if a piece is indeed genuine.

I also have a brown & green glazed "Tang" lady on a black horse holding a puppy which I paid S$400 about 20 years ago. Height around 32 inches. Likely a reproduction but may not have been made recently.

In 1992 I paid S3,800 for a modern Lalique crystal sculpture of a double fish. The S$400 black "Tang" horse gives me just as much joy as the more expensive crystal sculpture, even if it is modern with a broken/reattached ear.

Genuine glazed examples in fine condition sell for at least two orders of magnitude more than SGD 120. You can consult sales results on the Sothebys and Christies websites yourself for confirmation.
