Subject:Japanese Meiji (?) Bronze Koi
Posted By: Amelia Tue, Mar 24, 2015 IP: 68.70.7.19

I recently bought this hollow bronze koi statue on eBay. I was told that it was Meiji era, and though I suspect it may be newer than that and I've seen similar ones elsewhere online, this one has a very interesting mark of a man on the bottom. I'm confused as to why visually identical castings would carry different marks, and I can't find anything online about this mark. Any information would be appreciated.

Updated eBay link to differently marked example (supposedly marked "Debvt" though the seller doesn't show the mark in pictures). This other identical-looking example was listed under "reproduction antiques", does that mean that the one I have is the original? I purchased it because I liked it, so even if I overpaid I'm okay with that. No one has any info on the marking on my fish? Thanks again to all who look(ed).

Trying to (once again) post a working link to the auction of the identical-looking casting, hopefully it works this time!
