Subject:Japanese painting on wood
Posted By: Nancy Thu, Mar 26, 2015 IP: 69.244.96.180

Hi,
I'm hoping someone can help me research this large Japanese painting on wood. It measures 31" x 40", reads Woman with a Puppet by Tsukioka Settei (1710-1786) Japanese painting, Edo Period, Ukiyoe School, & is signed in Asian characters on the side.
Can anyone comment on age, I'm assuming this is later? Thanks.
Nancy

It's a copy from a 18th century painting by Settei that is now in the Freer and Sackler Galleries (Smithsonian Institution). The original can be viewed in the link below.

Tsukioka Settei was one of the leading ukiyo-e artists from Kyoto. I presume that the panel was made for - and sold to the early tourists visiting Kyoto, at the beginning of the 20th century. The original painting was probably purchased in Japan by Charles Lang freer around the 1910s.

Guy.
