Subject:Qianlong period incense holder - please help to authenticate!
Posted By: Jackie Mon, Mar 30, 2015 IP: 203.12.60.120

Hello,

I found this censer in my father's shed - I have no experience in identifying antiques, could you please help me?

Thank you in advance!

I did a quick eBay search and found a similar piece with the same Qian Long stamp. The Chinese vendor is asking $260 for it, which seems at least $200 too much to me, but these aren't my thing, so someone who likes them might indeed pay the asking price. Cloisonne does take a lot of work to produce.

The replica Qian Long stamp seems to have been a favorite of 20th century and recent cloisonne workshops, it shows up frequently.

Here's the link to an auction for a quite similar censer that attracted no attention from Chinese bidders. Probably a good sign that it and perhaps yours are not as old as their marks might suggest. It also seems from a quick look at marked period cloisonné censers in several Christie's auctions that their vetted examples tend to have linear reign marks, though you may wish to do more thorough research in the same archives to bear out the validity of this observation.

Best regards,

Bill H.
