Subject:Satsuma Vase help... Please
Posted By: John Tue, Mar 31, 2015 IP: 24.44.45.107

Can anyone help me with identifying the pictured Satsuma vase, artist, age and or any other information? It is about 9" tall and has a stamp imprinted on the base. You can only see partial imprint of the stamp on the base. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

John

Here's a link to paste in your browser. Leads to an eBay forum where there's a discussion of the following mark, which seems to be related to yours:

陶玉園,五助製 (Pottery Jade Garden, Made By Gosuke)

http://community.ebay.com/t5/Pottery-Glass-Porcelain/Chinese-Porcelain-Mark-Blue-amp-white-footed-bowl/td-p/22742509

You'll have to scroll down to the last part to find the photos and heart of the info. The only thing readable with certainty on your vase is "Made by Gosuke". The vase looks like porcelain, not Satsuma stoneware.

Good Luck,

Bill H.

Bill,

Thank you very much for your help. It is greatly appreciated. I am attempting to do more research with the information you provided. Does the fact the seal is impressed, instead of hand signed add or reduce the value and or collect ability of the vase?
Thank you again.

This is not Satsuma but probably Meiji era Seto ware. The impressed mark, shown upside down, reads 'Gosuke sei'(五助製 - made by Gosuke).

Specialists could inform us further if the maker is eventually Kato Gosuke IV.

Guy,

Bill,

Thank you very much for your help. It is greatly appreciated. I am attempting to do more research with the information you provided. I asked this same question to Bill, do you feel the fact the seal is impressed, instead of hand signed add or reduce the value and or collect ability of the vase?

Thank you again.

I would think the value of this vase would depend on overall condition and pinning the mark down to a specific generation of the potters who may have used it. Ranking not too far behind Hirado, I believe the Seto kilns produced some of the better true porcelains made in Japan during the Meiji period.

Best regards,

Bill,

Thank you again for your help. It is greatly appreciated. I will attempt to figure out the specific generation of potter and or any additional information. The piece appears to be in great shape with its age in my novice eyes.

Thank you.

John
