Subject:Help Identifying Type and or Dating of Chinese Glass Based On Gold Drops or Bubble Inclusion
Posted By: George Tue, Apr 07, 2015 IP: 70.199.142.144

Having a hard time dating a mould blown glass Chinese Snuff Bottle.

Along with the other clues shown on the bottle, I am hoping that there may also be a clue to these small gold drops or bubbles within the bottle that may help in dating the glass.

I know that Jesuit missionaries introduced to the Chinese the use of gold and even copper flakes into the molten glass so as to produce different colored glass. But these gold drops or bubbles are unlike that.

Any help here within the Asian Arts community will be greatly appreciated, and or if someone can refer me to someone else outside this forum that may be able to help, that would also be appreciated..

These are seen via an endoscope at 200x

Yes, that is my forum, and have asked a few of the more experienced guys by email..

But this is a bit out of our normal snuff bottle area of expertise..

Really need someone who has an understanding of 18th and 19th century Chinese and or Venitian glass formulas.

I did email the Corning Museum of Glass.. With a little luck maybe one of the experts there will know what these are, and connect them to a specific type of glass..

Thanks though Mat !

Since you posted photo of actual bottle at snuff bottle forum, persons there were able to identify it as being newly made.

New Chinese glass producers have been imitating 20th-century glass formulas (not always well) and even shapes. Also creating different formulas and new shapes.

Your bottle has nothing to do with 18th- or 19th-Venitian glass.
