Subject:Identify teapot-maker, age, origin
Posted By: Susan Shelton Thu, Apr 09, 2015 IP: 70.190.43.206

Hello
I have this really pretty teapot mom gave me a long time ago. I would like to know if it is from China or Japan, maker, year made and any information you can. Marking is only on bottom of teapot. Makes me think of Nippon. Thank you all in advance.

I guess my photos were too large.
I will try this again and hopefully they show up.

The mark, shown rotated 90 degrees to the right of reading position, says "Made by/at Shimamura" (島村製 - Shimamura Sei). The decoration is in the Nippon style, but the pot possibly was made after "Nippon" was supplanted by "Made in Japan" around 1920, by which time exports marked with the latter notice on paper labels were common.

Best regards,

Bill H.
