Hello,

I would very much appreciate any help to investigate this nice piece of craftsmanship I got several years ago. I enjoy a lot looking at it, admire its composition, the subtleness all around the work, it is a very nice piece of art to me and I would like to know a bit more about it, about the people who did it, where, when, any information about this or similar works. Conservation hints are also appreciated.

The work is mounted over a 130x190 structure. Some parts are a bit degraded (the first crane´s body, the top).
I was told when I bought it that it might come from Philippines, but he seemed not really convincing.

Can you help me? Do you know similar works?

It is possibly as much as a years work judging by the detail. Size isn't clear but my grandmother's both embroidered so I have a fair idea of how much work was involved even if it is only 12x12 in it would take a month and it seems a lot larger than that. Nice to see the arts of women being appreciated. They often go unrecognized

In fact is very big, near 2 meters high. I appreciate a lot this work and I consider not only being a masterful piece of craftsmanship but a splendid art in itself, perfect composition, perspective, etc. It is a pity that some parts are degrading and some colors likely disappeared.
I am looking forward to know about similar arts to try learning a bit about its history. I did not succeed yet.

in all likely hood the silk was grown and dyed in the town or village if not by the embroidered themselves...the artist may have been a man but in many asian cultures the men are deemed " to clumsy" to do detailed work. If you have ever seen the incredible carvings produced in Thailand for instance all are the work of women.

I trust anyone who has lived for a number of years in Japan knows the crane design very well. Golden colors on black background are also typical.

Crane is a popular subject in arts and crafts in China and Japan, but the use of dominantly black and gold colors in the design is more Japanese than Chinese. Google "embroidery Japan crane" you can see somewhat similar pieces. Cheers.

I will keep trying, but to be honest i have not found similar pieces despite of deep searching. Its is not only about cranes, but about those cranes, that composition, that size (2 meters aprox), that art.
