Subject:is this a fake Kitagawa Utamaro?
Posted By: Mika Wed, Apr 29, 2015 IP: 86.81.160.184

Hi! I wondered if this was a real or fake Kitagawa Utamaro. The print is named UNDER AN UMBRELLA and an original can be found here http://ukiyo-e.org/image/harvard/HUAM-CARP02738. Thanks!

It is most probably an original, but in bad condition, soiled, with the colors almost completely faded.

More info on this print can be found in the link below.

Thank you for your replay!!!
I recently bought this for 30 euros because I liked the lines. Its a shame the owners did not take care of the print. Is there anything to be done clean it up? Unfortunately the owners also used glue to put print in place. I live in the Netherlands by the way. The had also an Utagawa Hiroshige print, the
Goshiki Beach in Awaji Province, all in blue and orange. I did not buy that one, cause I missed the green and reds to much, the original was way better. But with the 'UNDER AN UMBRELLA'from Utamaro I did not mind.

The fading of the vegetable dyes in the Utamaro print is irreversible. The blue and orange Hiroshige is indicative that it also faded over the years from exposure to sunlight.

Cheers,
Stan
