Subject:Japanese woodblock prints
Posted By: Carlos M Thu, Apr 30, 2015 IP: 72.80.71.247

I've had this "Hokusai" piece for some time. I'm now reaching out to Stan, Bill H, and others. Is this the real deal, or a re-cut? My extensive search on this piece has been hopeless to find an answer.

Thank you, Carlos

In my opinion, it is not an original. I am immediately suspicious when I see an early 1800s print in such good condition. That is a weird blue. Compare it to originals at the Boston MFA (they have 5) and you'll see the differences pretty easily.

Cheers,
Stan

Stan,

That's, exactly what I did, to compare with other originals, and the logical conclusion I had come to accept. But, I had to finally post it, so that I could get it out of my system. Thanks so much again. I have another possible Hokusai re-cut, that I will post.

Carlos
