Subject:Willy Seiler-Worth?
Posted By: ESizemore Sun, May 03, 2015 IP: 98.247.113.231

I am trying to find out more about this water color and what it maybe worth. When it may have been done, It does not have a title listed or a plate number that I can tell. It was purchased in Germany I believe but could not tell you what year. I believe it maybe a etching due to the indents around the art work. Also the paper is faded slightly from age. Any information would be great appreciated..

Looking at Seiler works in the LiveAuctioneers archive, I found a black & white version of your etching (link below), in the size 5 1/2" x 4 3/4", or about one-third normal dimensions. It was used on the cover of a 13-etching art calendar published by Seiler and Karuizawa for the year 1954. The calendar was listed as sold at auction for $140 against an estimate of $300-450 and starting bid of $150. Presuming your hand-colored etching may be larger, some of the auctioned ones around the 12.5" x 15" size were fetching between $25 and $50.

A framed pair of his B&W etchings of pearl divers drew a hammer price of $700, which pleases me because I own another one of his tinted works in that theme shown below, size 8.5" x 12", which I'll now have to look elsewhere to check the price.

Best regards,

Bill H.
