Subject:Japanese Prints , Need Help Please!
Posted By: Stelian Bogdan Tue, May 05, 2015 IP: 67.246.131.161

I've got this two prints in action last night and I'm curious to find more about the artist and the subject. Can somebody help me please?

This is a nice woodblock diptych, in good condition, of two kabuki actors during a performance.
The print is signed 'Toyokuni ga', refering to the famous ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Toyokuni I (1769-1825). Beneath the signature is the publisher's mark of Tsuruya Kinsuke. At the right of the signature are two seals: a kiwame censor's seal combined with a date seal for Bunka 3, 10th month (or 10th month of 1806).

If you post a close-up of the actor names printed in the upper part of both prints I could give you a further identification.

Guy.

The signature is that of Toyokuni I. It appears to be one of his later signatures, say circa 1820. The subject looks to be two samurai. Likely the names of the samurai are at the top of the prints.

Cheers,
Stan
