Subject:REPOST: Porcelain Artist Help Please
Posted By: John Wed, May 13, 2015 IP: 24.44.45.107

I recently purchased the pictured Chinese porcelain fan which I believe was painted by the artist Liu Yucen in the Jiazi Year 1924. I am not sure if I am correct. If anyone can tell me if in fact I am correct and or any other information on the piece, I would greatly appreciate that. Thank you in advance.

The inscription purports this fan plaque to be by Liu as you surmise, but the quality of the painting and other clues tell a different story. This appears to be a 1970's or later fabrication. Liu was part of the famed 'Eight Friends of Zhushan' group of Jingdezhen porcelain painters, thus well known during his time (1904-1969). This notoriety spawned many modern copies and outright fakes of works with his forged signature. One clue revealing the fakester's hand in this case is what I perceive to be the artificially dirtied back of the plaque.

Here's a link to a Sotheby's auction of four 'Bird & Flower' plaques by Liu. The zoom feature should help you appreciate the differences between your fan and the brighter, more animated quality of Liu's brushwork. Other forum discussion of Liu may be accessed via the search feature near the top right of the page.

Best regards,

Bill H.
